Adrian Galvez, senior captain of the Glen Rock High School wrestling team, has been named the NJIC Wrestler of the Week. A rewarding accomplishment after the growth and effort he has put into the wrestling program over the past four years. His journey from freshman year has been nothing short of inspirational. Galvez continues to dominate his 215 weight class–he pinned his last opponent in 59 seconds during the most recent match on Wednesday, January 22.

Galvez reflected on his recent title of NJIC Wrestler of the Week with words of motivation, “Anything is possible when you just keep practicing.”

Continuing to lead his team to victory, Galvez still faces challenges as a team member and a captain. His skill progression this year has been transformative, as he steps into the role of leader while simultaneously keeping his goals as a wrestler in mind.

“Key qualities that make a great team captain are showing up on time to practice, being the first one in and out of the [wrestling] room, and having strong leadership skills,” Galvez remarked.

His dedication to the program and his team doesn’t end when practice is over. Galvez strives to go the extra mile by participating in club wrestling during the off-season, training whenever possible around matches, and pushing the team to do the same. Head coach, Corey Fitzpatrick, shared his insights with Galvez’s unwavering commitment this season.

“Some other programs name their captains at the end of their last seasons, but we really base the position on the kind of commitment being put in on and off the mat. The way he treats his teammates, helping them improve every practice really shows us he is dedicated,” Fitzpatrick shared.

Wrestling being such a high-pressure sport, a good support system is necessary to thrive. Galvez acknowledges all of the mentors and past teammates who have helped him learn and get to this point, where now he can pass the torch to a new generation of wrestlers.

“With as much success as I have had this season so far, you also have to take into account my partners that I wrestle with in the room. You always have to regard the team in the training aspect of it and I try to get everyone to push themselves in the room, doing as much as they can. Putting in that extra effort is really where you get better,” Galvez reflected.
