Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State, died early Easter Monday at the age of 88. The bells of St. Peter’s Basilica rang to mark his death, honoring the 13 years he dedicated to the Catholic Church as pope. The funeral was held on Saturday, April 26th, in front of St. Peter’s Basilica. Contrary to other pope’s in the past, Pope Francis has requested to be buried in the Basilica of St. Mary Major, a church that holds special memories regarding his spiritual journey. The conclave will announce the new pope in the coming weeks, after all ballots have been counted and burned.
