Is it justifiable to have Spring Break in March?

Glen Rock High School has made this year’s “Spring Break” on March 23 through March 31 which doesn’t correspond with the weather in March. Throughout March the weather will be in the 40 degrees which isn’t the ideal “Spring” weather since it has also been reported by “njweather.org” that it will be scorched in the East Coast area.

Considering these weather conditions, it doesn’t make sense to have Spring Break in March especially because it’s the start of Spring which is usually dry and dull. However, the break is determined by the Easter Break; this year Easter is on the 31st of March, a Sunday. This idea would be a great filler for our current break which is the last week of March and has no significance towards the weather that Spring has.

Along with that, during March there’s still a possibility of snow even though it’s “the beginning of Spring”. It would be preferable to have it in the middle of April because it’s prime Spring weather with little to no rain but it’ll be in the 50 degrees. Overall, the weather would be much more appealing in April than in March because of the temperature difference.

Spring Break in April would be much more ideal because kids can spend most of their day outside doing various activities in the warmth rather than in March when we still have the possibility of snow. According to the National Library of Medicine, it would benefit kids much more to be outside in the sunlight (April) than in dull weather (March) because there are various vitamins that you intake in sunlight that benefit your health.

Most of the testing for 6-9 grade happens in April so the mentality of the weather being cold and dark affects the mindset when you wake up. Students who have to take state tests during April are more likely to have a different mindset based on the weather than in March Personally, it seems ridiculous to call it “Spring Break” if it doesn’t feel like Spring. The solution to the conflict of when we should have Spring break is that we could have the 29th off since Easter is the 31st of March and the whole first week of April which somewhat resembles any signs of Spring weather. This solution could satisfy the students just as much as the staff and guardians because it is way more pleasant and efficient.
