On Tuesday, May 19, Glen Rock High School students gathered together on the Lower and Upper Field for Rockfest; a new addition to the school, something in place of the Spring Pep Rally. With the help from Mr. McGoey and Mr. Morelli, the student council planned a creative experience for all students in the high school, highlighting the community that is Glen Rock High School.
“We noticed with the pep rally that we didn’t have as much engagement with the student body as we wanted to. An issue we saw is that usually the same five people are playing games and everyone’s just sitting and supposed to be cheering, but nobody really cares,” Student Council Secretary and Senior Izabela Samu stated.
As well as being a fun afternoon for students, RockFest was also an educational opportunity. The police department conducted a “drunk driving” simulation on the lower field. Seniors and juniors had the opportunity to drive golf carts whilst wearing fatal vision goggles that simulated the feeling of being intoxicated, promoting the dangers of drinking and driving.
Similarly, the event promoted Mental Health Awareness by having mental health trivia to enter a raffle – run by the Wellness Center, tables for mental health organizations, and promotions for the Wellness Center in the High School.
“May is Mental Health Awareness Month so the idea of making healthy choices and have fun right?.. The stigma of Mental Health, you know, we can talk about it, or a lot of people do struggle with their mental health,” Mr. Klump added.
