The Holiday
This Christmas romance movie is about two women who swap houses for a month, looking for an escape from work. One woman, Iris, is a journalist living in a small town in England struggling with a schoolgirl crush on her boss. The other, Amanda, is a successful movie trailer creator in Los Angeles who just broke up with her cheating boyfriend. This movie I only recently watched for the first time this past December, but it has not left my head since. Filled with heartwarming scenes featuring the A-list cast of Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, and Kate Winslet, this movie had me absolutely entranced with its perfect mixture of comedy and romance. Director, writer, and producer Nancy Meyers captured the true meaning of Christmas in this touching romance movie beloved by all who watch it even now, 20 years later.
27 Dresses
Katherine Heigl and James Marsden star in this rom-com featuring Jane, a woman who loves weddings and has attended 27 of them, and Kevin, a journalist who writes under the pseudonym Malcolm, who hates weddings. This movie is a perfect lighthearted romantic comedy for those looking to watch a new rom-com. The themes of friendship and loyalty are uniquely represented in this 2008 film, making it a one-of-a-kind movie that leaves me wanting to rewatch it again and again and again.
Inspired by Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, this high school romance is perfect for those looking for a light-hearted rom-com to watch on a Sunday night with a tub of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. It’s one of my personal favorites, and one that I find myself rewatching more than once a year simply for its iconic scenes that make me swoon, laugh, and cry. Starring Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, and the late Heath Ledger, if you’re searching for a movie that will stick with you as much as it did with me, then definitely watch this one.
If you’re like me and enjoy hilarious romance, then you should watch “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” Witty banter and adorable scenes from leads Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson are the heart and soul of this movie, which follows two journalists who date each other to prove a point to their coworkers, whilst unknowingly landing right into the other person’s schemes. I find this to be the reason as to why this movie is so unique. Simply because the main characters are so focused on their own goals, that they do not realize they are being played.
Pride and Prejudice
The screen adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, Pride and Prejudice, follows Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, two people from very different lifestyles, as they clash when it comes to their opinions of marriage and familial relationships. I find it honors Austen’s incredible mind while also taking certain creative liberties, one being its choice in really playing into the book’s aesthetic, that enhances the film’s deeper meaning, making it one of my favorite movies ever. If a relaxing romance is what appeals to you, look no further than this late eighteenth century classic film that captures the hearts of many with its incredible acting, engaging plot, and an ending that will leave you thinking about it for days.
