The Glen Rock High School Relay for Life committee will be organizing purple week from Monday, April 25 to Friday, April 29.  Paint purple is a week long, school wide competition to  celebrate and spread the word about Relay for Life.

“All grades are encouraged to participate and get spirited,” said Ms. Amanda Sproviero,  a math teacher at Glen Rock High School as well as co-adviser of the high school teams.  “The goal is to make kids aware of the upcoming Relay. During this time, students are encouraged to join their class team, fundraise as much as possible, and get their youth participation and chaperone forms in by April 29!”

In order to attend or participate in Relay for Life, every student must hand in a youth participation form.  Those interested in sleeping over must make sure that there is one chaperone for every ten students.

During the week, there will be different activities such as a bake sale, coin wars and luminaria and banner decorating.  There will also be different fundraisers each day at participating locations such as John’s Boy, Ben and Jerry’s and Anthony’s Coal Fire Pizza.  The week culminates with purple day in which every student is encouraged to wear purple as well as hand in their youth participation forms.

“This is the first time that GRHS is holding this event and we hope to make it an annual tradition,” Sproviero said.  “I’m hoping that this event increases our participation in the high school and makes handing in forms easier.”

This year, Glen Rock’s Relay for Life lost two major teams: St. Luke’s Youth Group and Ridgewood Interact.  Glen Rock was also not reassigned a new American Cancer Society representative, putting significant responsibility on the committee.  Despite this, the committee has continued to increase numbers such as teams and participants.  The fundraising goal continues to increase each day as well.

“I think the students will really enjoy the competitive atmosphere and all the opportunities to get involved,” Sproviero added.  “The students will also get an opportunity to ask about the event and learn about it and get involved with their grades.”

Glen Rock Relay for Life will be held from May 14 to May 15 at Alexander Hamilton Elementary School.
