‘Argylle’: One too many plot twists

On February 2nd, the highly anticipated film “Argylle” was released. It tells the story of main character Elly Conway, a best-selling espionage novelist, played by Jurassic World actress Bryce Dallas Howard. Elly finds her books start to mirror the actions of a real-life spy organization causing the lines between imagination and reality start to fade. When Conway meets a real life spy named Aidan, the movie drags out to have a dramatic unveiling of who Argylle truly is. But is anyone who they say they are? Is Elly? Is Aidan? And why did Dua Lipa agree to that dance scene with Henry Cavil?
Rejected by many critics Matthew Vaughn‘s newest picture “Argylle” has bombed at the box office, only making $18 million and a catastrophic $35 million globally. But “Argylle” forgets the thrill and “one your toes” moments that your stereotypical spy feature has. As a big spy movie fan myself, this did not meet my expectations.
The amount of plot twists in this film makes your head spin. When the truth is revealed halfway into the picture, the plot twists keep coming as characters change many many times. Honestly I was sick of it. The movie is supposed to be a spy and action movie, so of course you’re going to want plot twists but the twists become less clever, less imaginative, way too predictable and went separate ways from the true plot. Not only is the plot completely insane, the amount of unnecessary scenes blew my mind.
Out of the many shocking scenes, one really caught my mind. Set to Leona Lewis’ cover of “Run”, Conway and Aidan shoot smoke canisters into a mob of bad guys, escaping with vibrant, colorful smoke in the air. The two move with each other as if they’re ballroom dancing. Aidan swings Conway around elegantly, allowing her to strike another group of bad guys. While the scene played I was trying to not laugh out loud.
Despite me being very sick of the twists and turns and unnecessary scenes, the movie was very well done with an insane cast. Howard and Sam Rockwell’s characters did not fail to uphold their roles. The chemistry between Elly Conway and Aidan (Sam Rockwell) is unmatched and you can sense the tension from the very moment they met. The remaining cast members are Bryan Cranston, Samuel L Jackson, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Henry Cavil, John Cena and Ariana DeBose. The plot may be confusing at times but it is SUPER engaging and leaves the viewers wanting to know what happens. The film is very brightly colored with moments that will make you cry from laughter and physically cringe.
While many scenes left me with second hand embarrassment, the acting is fantastic and no character felt forced and the actor was doing this for the money. This movie seemed very genuine on the actors and actresses parts, showing the joy they had filming this. Never again will I pay 23 dollars to see a failed spy movie, but I may watch it again once it comes to Apple TV.
