by Naomi Bashan, Social Media Manager

2021 was THE year for celebrity drama. Breakups, scandals, and reunions galore, there was never a dull moment. What better way to say goodbye to a hectic year than by evaluating our favorite pop culture events? We asked, you answered! Read more to find out our Glen Echo poll winners!

Most Shocking Breakup: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were voted in as the most shocking breakup of 2021. The ex-couple shares 4 kids, North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm. Linked to each other soon after Kardashian’s short lived marriage with basketball player Kris Humphries, West and Kardashian have been a celebrity power couple, dubbed “Kimye” by fans. However, it has not been a clean break for the pair. West posted a video alleging that he had been excluded from their daughter’s birthday party. Later, photos surfaced of him at the event, confirming that he had been included. To add to the drama, Kim has been linked to Saturday Night Live’s Pete Davidson, and Kanye to actress Julia Fox. Hardcore Kimye fans are definitely mourning the loss of this power couple. We wish them the best on their separate endeavors here at the Glen Echo!

Best celebrity duo: Harry and Lizzo

The winners of the Best Celebrity Friendship category, GRHS’ favorite dynamic duo is none other than “Truth Hurts” singer Lizzo and “Adore You” singer Harry Styles! Just like the green and purple hues of their outfits, this pair compliments each other well. We’re still dreaming about their joint performance in 2020 and hope that they reunite on stage soon!

Unexpected News: Lil Nas X blood shoes

Winner of the Unexpected News Category is Lil Nas X and his “Satan Shoes.” A collaboration with the brand MSCHF, an art collective known for releasing controversial art. The so-called “blood” sneakers were an adaptation of the Nike Air Max 97’ shoes. Made with red ink, and one drop of real human blood per sneaker, the shoes created quite an outrage. The shoes were meant to go along with Lil Nas X’s “Montero” music video. Nike released a definitive statement distancing themselves, as a brand, from this MSCHF design due to backlash from conversative politicians, who deemed the product “indecent.”

Best Celebrity Couple: Tom and Zendaya

2021’s best couple: Tom Holland and Zendaya are quite the pair! Initially starring together in 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, the actor duo have left fans speculating about their relationship for years. Most recently, they can be spotted in interviews for the press circuit of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Most notable are their loved-up instagram posts of one another. We’ll be sure to keep our eyes peeled for more Tom/Zendaya appearances!

Best Album: Red TV

Voted in as the Best Album of 2021 is Red (Taylor’s Version), a rerecording of her original 2012 studio album of the same name. Swift is currently in the process of re-recording all of her original studio albums, due to the fact that she does not own the master recordings. Re-recording her albums is Swift’s way of reclaiming her personal legal ownership of her own hard work. It’s amazing to see a woman in the music industry who stands her ground, no matter what. Red (Taylor’s Version) includes a mix of original 2012 songs re-recorded and adjusted to fit Swift’s maturing voice and advanced instrumentation. In addition, the revamped album featured 9 songs from “The Vault.” Vault songs are those that did not make the original album, but are featured on the re-recording. Red (Taylor’s Version) is a masterful album, bringing new breath to old work.

Best Reality TV: THTH

Winner of the Best Reality TV category, Netflix original reality show Too Hot To Handle has taken audiences by storm. The show is run by a traffic-cone shaped virtual assistant named Lana, who is quick and witty with her one-liners. Viewers are drawn to the drama of the island, the premise being a group of single people who attempt to learn the value of genuine connection over meaningless relationships. Too Hot To Handle is steamy but also silly, mostly drawing in viewers through humor. If you’re looking for a binge-watch, THTH is the way to go

Best Marvel Series: WandaVision

2021 also marked the launch of several Marvel TV shows that premiered exclusively on Disney+, the best of them being WandaVision, featuring actress Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda. Voted in by students as the best Marvel Series, “WandaVision” is an enthralling aesthetic presentation of how gripping grief can be. The show picks up after the Marvel movie “Avengers: Endgame” and follows character Wanda coping with the aftermath of previous events.

Best Movie: No Way Home

Spiderman: No Way Home marks the third movie of Tom Holland’s Spiderman trilogy. The movie explores the opening of the multiverse, confirming the existence of multiple dimensions of the Marvel Comic Universe. “No Way Home” features an exhilarating performance from actor Tom Holland, who has mastered the character of Peter Parker. Bringing home 1.739 billion dollars, Spiderman: NWH proves to be a fast fan favorite. It’s a must-watch, and definitely deserves its spot as GRHS’ favorite movie of 2021!
