A double win for Glen Rock soccer

The boys varsity soccer team treated fans to an overtime thriller and raised funds for cancer on Saturday, Sept. 16 on the lower field.

The Garfield and Glen Rock teams were both undefeated up until this point, with each team vying to take the lead in the league. The day was also host to a fundraiser for “Kicking Cancer,” which raised about $1,770 for cancer research.

Starting out, control of the ball went back-and-forth until twelve minutes into the game when Garfield scored off of a corner kick. Garfield also continued to take shots at Glen Rock’s goal, but, Glen Rock’s goalie, Zack Fazal, was able to block the ball. With nine minutes left in the first half, Glen Rock was close to scoring, but ultimately the first half ended with Garfield leading by one.

Shortly into the second half, Glen Rock earned a penalty kick that Nick Rodgers kicked at the goalie, bouncing it off his hands, which Nick then kicked right into the goal, tying up the game. Throughout the second half, multiple yellow cards were handed out to both sides. Both teams continued to take multiple shots at each other’s goals, but no one scored. In the last five seconds, Garfield had a close shot, but once again  Fazal managed to save it.

With the score tied at 1-1 and the clock out of of time, the game went into overtime.

The ball went back and forth rapidly, but five minutes into overtime, Josh Kim scored the final goal, making Glen Rock victorious. The whole team rushed over to the fan section in elation at , keeping their season undefeated.

The head soccer coach, Casey Schick said, “I was happy with the outcome and how our team played for parts of the game, but we are always looking to improve and get better. Our team is never satisfied with a win, we just look to build off of the momentum for the next game.”
