GRHS Theatre Company presents: Great Expectations

The Glen Rock High School Theatre Company will perform a stage adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, Friday, Nov. 21, and Saturday, Nov. 22. More than 40 GRHS students will be presenting this brilliant retelling of Dickens’ classic 1860 novel. This heart-wrenching tale was adapted for the stage by British playwright Neil Bartlett.

Set in and around Kent, England, in the early-to-mid 1800s, Pip, an orphan who lives with his older sister, as well as with her husband, a blacksmith, is accustomed to little more than his peaceful village life and occasional trips to the churchyard. But, when Pip is invited over to play by Miss Havisham, a wealthy spinster uptown, and is granted a sum of money and some land in London by a mysterious donor, Pip embarks on a journey to become a gentleman— Soon learning truths about himself and the world around him that turn his life upside down.

A tale of loss, love, and ultimately growth, Great Expectations is enjoyed by audiences of all ages and interests.

Neil Bartlett is known for his profound adaptations of Victorian literary works, noted specifically for his trueness to the authors’ original intentions. Bartlett has adapted other works of Dickens’, including A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist. Original works of Bartlett’s includes In Extremis, a play commemorating the centenary of the death of Oscar Wilde.
