They say fashion always repeats itself, and this is definitely true for New York’s Fall 2012 Fashion Week.

Military inspired coats were spotted throughout the runways by Burberry Prorsum, Victoria Beckham, and countless others; of course with a little twist. The coats were adorned with intricate gold buttons that added a certain glamour to an otherwise masculine trend. Knee high boots were sported with these jackets and black leather belts cinched dresses and skirts. The main hues used on military inspired clothing were olive greens, browns, and blacks.

All- black dresses by Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, and Calvin Klein looked extremely sleek in leather and wax material. Michael Kors even designed a leather quarter sleeve shirt with a scoop neckline, black trouser pants, a black leather belt, and black mary jane heels. Of course New Yorkers praised this fall trend, since they are notorious for their all black outfits. All- white outfits by Derek Lam, Peter Som, J. Mendel, and others looked especially airy with pleated maxi skirts and white crocheted sweaters.  Who needs the no white after Labor Day rule anyway?

Grandma’s closet was another fall fashion inspiration for designers. Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, and Tory Burch used crochet, floral prints, and eccentric brooches and other accessories in their designs. Tory Burch described her fall collection as “Polished with an edge. Definitely more fitted silhouettes.”  Jacobs added an oversized safety pin brooch to a black crocheted wrap along with an oversized black floppy hat that completed the look. Burch and L’Wren Scott even rocked tweed pants. Carolina Herrera’s gray tweed coat had a touch of the 40’s with a black fur lined collar.

Whatever your style is, designers have definitely surprised the public with their unique designs for the fall season.
