The 2025 Glen Rock High School Club fair took place on Tuesday, Sept. 30. This event is held annually at GRHS and is an interactive way for the student body to learn about and get involved with clubs at their school. Every club is assigned a table, and this year there was a new addition: the Sign Language Club.
The co-founders of this club are juniors Ada Atli, Abbey Baker, Elizabeth Lee, Sia Parekh, Avery Schuchman, and Leher Selarka. Their mission in starting the club was to spread inclusivity to the community, giving students an opportunity to learn more about ASL.
“Our goal is to create a welcoming space where students can learn and practice sign language while gaining a deeper understanding of deaf culture,” Schuchman said.
Club meetings are held about once a month during lunch, where members will gather to learn some basic sign language. The presidents ask that students attend if possible, but if you have a lab or another conflict, talk to someone who attended to see what you missed.
“No matter your skill level, everyone is welcome in the club and encouraged to attend the meetings to learn more.” co-founder Sia Parekh emphasized.
The Presidents’ first goal for the newly established club is to talk to local Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops in the community about ASL, and to teach sign language in a fun, simple way, by showing them how to do basic signs, like signing their name.
“This is a small first project, but the Presidents and I hope it will have a significant impact on the community, and that it has the potential to reach a lot of people,” Officer Leher Selarka said.
The club is always looking for new members, so if you’re interested in joining, you can reach out to any of the presidents, join the schoology page (VSB9-XZRW-4VQ79), or follow the club on Instagram @glenrocksignlanguage
