The leaves are falling. The air is crisp.  Pumpkin spice is everywhere…  It can only mean one thing: Halloween season is here! It’s time to grab some popcorn and get ready to celebrate with a movie marathon. From classics to modern thrillers, here are five movies that will send shivers down your spine.

Coraline (Amazon Prime)- 7/10

     This movie is about Coraline Jones, a young girl who moves into a new home and discovers a secret door leading to a creepy “Other World”. At first, the other world seems perfect, but soon Coraline realizes behind the button-eyes and fake smiles, something dark and dangerous lies. I personally was terrified of this movie as a child, but I ended up loving it while re-watching this year. With a thrilling animation and an eerie atmosphere, Coraline is a perfect Halloween watch for those who love a creepy, clever, and chilling atmosphere.

The Black Phone (Hulu and Peacock)- 9/10

      The Black Phone follows a 13 year old boy named Finney, living in a small Colorado town during the 1970s. When he is kidnapped by a masked serial killer known as “The Grabber”, and is thrown into his basement, he discovers a disconnected black phone that mysteriously allows him to communicate with the killer’s previous victims. With their help, he is able to outsmart his captor. I loved this movie because it had a great storyline and a rewarding ending. This film is perfect for those who enjoy suspense, supernatural abilities, and jump scares! Also, if you love this movie, the second has just hit theaters- and I can confirm it’s  just as good, and even gorier! 

The Nightmare Before Christmas (Disney+) – 6/10

      This classic is a much-needed watch during the Halloween season. The movie follows Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin Kind of Halloween Town, who becomes tired of his same routine. When he stumbles upon Christmas Town, Jack becomes enchanted by the cheer and jolly of the holiday and decides that he wants to take over Christmas himself. I love to rewatch this film with my parents, however it is not scary enough for many. This film is perfect to watch between the Halloween and Christmas season, and offers a perfect nostalgic feeling.

Ghostbusters (Peacock and Hulu)- 8/10

      This movie is about a group of scientists in New York City who start a ghost-catching business after discovering many paranormal activities in the city. The team faces off against slimy spirits and a gigantic marshmallow man in this hilarious and action packed adventure. I love watching this movie because it reminds me of Halloween when I was younger. I also enjoy how there have been many remakes and other movies in the series, which makes this movie a perfect starting point. This comedic classic is a perfect film to watch during the holiday.

Beetlejuice (HBO and Hulu)- 7/10

      This Tim Burton film is about a recently deceased couple who hire a “bio exorcist” named Beetlejuice to scare away the new family who has recently moved into their home. This movie has a hilarious twist and was an entertaining watch. This is perfect to watch for those who want a Halloween watch that is weird, witty and full of personality.
