The last and final season of “You” came out on April 24 of this year. The show’s ending followed Joe Goldberg to New York City from London, which is a full circle moment because the first season of the show began in the city. We begin to see his life with Kate Lockwood, his love interest from season four, live their famous luxurious lifestyle, but as the first episode progresses, we know that Joe’s old tendencies never left.
After the ending of the last season as the watcher, I was so curious on what Joe would get himself into again, especially with his life looking so perfect. Knowing his son would be more present in his life, I expected Joe to get his act together more… but of course that wasn’t possible. With a new luxury family comes new family members. The main ones being Kate Lockwood, Reagan Lockwood, Teddy Lockwood, and Uncle Bob.
In the first episode, we find out that Uncle Bob knows secrets about his wife’s past, which leads to a glimpse into the difficult dynamic between Joe and Kate. Along with this, Reagan, Kate’s sister, is the hater of the family, and Joe picks up on this. When watching, I just knew from the beginning she was going to bother Joe in some way and her actions lead to him understandably hating her, because of her annoyingness. Another annoying character is Bronte or “Louise”, who serves as the plot twist of the season with her character having a lot of dimension to it. Bronte is a victim to Joe’s manipulative tactics, which shows an interesting concept on how manipulation could get to someone so strongly. The romantic hold Joe had on her relates back to the audience of the people romanticizing Joe’s killer instincts, ultimately representing Joe’s fans.
Overall the ending of the show was hectic and it was the most action impact. I found that getting an insider glimpse of his internal thoughts are really interesting from a psychological aspect and is what makes his character stand out especially in this season.
In the end, the way the show connected all of the people who romanticize his killing instincts was amusing but overall, when it’s done, it’s just weird. I think making jokes involving Joe’s psychotic thinking can be funny, but when people try defending him it gets less funny. That being said, I will be rewatching.
