In the 2025 awards season, both the Oscars and the Golden Globes displayed wonderful “roast offs”, which masterfully balanced humor and respect. Nikki Glaser brought her charm to the Golden Globes, while Conan O’Brein hosted the Oscars this year with his humor and satire. 

    Nikki Glaser made history as the first solo female host of the Golden Globes, with a performance that was both funny and respectful. Her jokes included light-hearted digs at celebrities like Timothee Chalamet, whom she said had “the most gorgeous eyelashes-on [his] upper lip”. Galser’s ability to roast kindly and enthusiastically created genuine laughter and an enjoyable atmosphere. Lindsay Schassbereger, who is a senior at Glen Rock High School explained how much she loved the performance: “I loved watching the Golden Globes roast this year, it was so funny and the best joke was the one about Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco, and how he was only there because a genie granted him a wish”. Glaser had a much better approach and performance than previous years; when hosts caused controversy. Her charm and wit made the Golden Globes feel playful while not crossing the line into disrespectfulness. 

     Conan O’Brein, who was this year’s host of the Oscars, started with a pre-recorded skit. This skit included O’Brein emerging from Moore’s back, which was a humorous way to set the mood for the evening. O’Brein continued to make clever commentary and clever jokes, mostly about the Oscars as a whole. While he did address recent commentaries including one about Karal Sofia Gascons past social media posts, he kept his performance respectful and lighthearted. Sia Parekh, who is a sophomore at Glen Rock High School, commented on her thoughts about the Oscars performance this year, “I’ve always loved watching the Oscars, this year’s host was hilarious and it was a great celebration of the powerful year movies had”. Overall, his ability to balance lightheartedness with sincerity, especially while he brought up the Los Angeles wildfires, made for a wonderful show. 

     All in all, these roast offs contributed to an amazing 2025 awards season, and both Conan O’Brein and Nikki Glaser set a high bar for future hosts. These performances proved that award shows can show humor without being cruel and ill- mannered. It’s important for future hosts to have this same quality, as it makes a fun experience for everyone attending as well as watching.
