It’s finally time to sit down with a cup of hot chocolate and watch some cozy Christmas movies. This holiday season, we have chosen six underrated Christmas movies for you to give a try. Which ones will you choose?
The Holiday (Hulu and Amazon Prime) – 9.5/10 stars.
This movie is about two women: Iris from England and Amanda from an upscale part of Hollywood. Both women are dealing with relationship troubles and need a change of scenery. After these women swap houses during Christmas, they find much-needed romance and embrace their true selves. This movie is perfect for those looking for a warm, heartfelt film.
Holidate (Netflix) – 9/10
This is a silly, entertaining Christmas movie. It tells the story of Sloane and Jackson, two strangers who are both fed up with being alone during the holidays. Feeling pressured to be in a relationship, they agree to be each other’s platonic plus-one dates for holidays year-round. As the year progresses, we watch them develop feelings and navigate their growing relationship. Watching their dynamic evolve into a deeper connection was fun and engaging. Some may think this movie is cliche, but if you are looking for a light-hearted holiday romance this one is perfect.
Love Actually (Amazon Prime)- 8/10
“Love Actually” follows the story of eight couples in London who are dealing with their relationships differently. I loved following the storylines of multiple couples and seeing their connections grow. Unlike most holiday romances, this film explores love in all its forms, including friendship and family. Overall, the performances were wonderful with an impressive cast. This is the perfect movie for a night in.
Red One (AMC or other Movie Theaters)- 6/10
This action-packed movie is about how Santa Claus, or Red One, gets captured by the evil witch of Christmas. Throughout this movie, a high-tech tracker, Jack, and Santa’s security director, Callum, go on a mission to find Santa by Christmas Eve. While the action scenes were entertaining the cringy dialogue and messy plot made it hard to follow along. However, if you are looking for an adventure Christmas movie, this could be the one for you.
Polar Express (Hulu and Max) – 4/10
This movie is about a boy who is beginning to question if Santa is real or not. One night, he sees a train outside his window, headed to the North Pole. Invited by the conductor, he climbs aboard for an adventure to Santa’s headquarters. Along the way, the boy learns important lessons about the truth of Santa Claus. This might be a hot take, but I did not love this movie. The odd animation ruined it for me, and I could not get past the creepy-looking characters, despite its heartfelt message.
The Christmas Chronicles (Netflix) – 4.5/10
This funny, adventurous movie shows the aftermath of siblings Kate and Teddy trying to prove that Santa Claus is real. In the process, they accidentally crash his sleigh, causing Santa to lose his reindeer, sack of presents, and magic hat. With the help of Santa and his elves, the kids go on a wild adventure to try and save Christmas. In the process, they learn valuable lessons about belief and family. While it has fun moments, the predictable storyline and familiar tropes made it feel trite at times. Regardless, the humor and adventure still make it a decent family watch.
With something for everyone on this list, these movies will surely bring holiday cheer!
