It’s official, the New York Giants are the first team out of the run for the playoffs. Is it such a shock? Not really. Are Giants fans disappointed? Absolutely. As a long-time Giants fan, born into a Giants family, the Giant’s downfall has been crushing my family and me for years. Whenever the Giants play, my parents and I don’t expect a win and if we do watch the game, our heads are shaking at almost every play.
Even though their horrendous season has come to an end, this means it is time to start planning for next year. Now what I am about to share with you is probably what every other Giants fan is thinking: It’s time for a new Quarterback.
On November 22, 2024, starting Quarterback Daniel Jones, was released by John Mara, the team’s owner, after 5 rough seasons.
I was filled with so much excitement hearing that Jones was benched and would have Tommy Devito starting over him, but after seeing two additional losses after the release of Jones, I realized that there was more to the story.
Since the Giants are left without a star Quarterback, the rumors of two potential draft picks began to spread, Cam Warde (University of Miami) and Shedeur Deion Sanders (Colorado University). Unfortunately for the Giants, if they decide to draft Sanders, they would be drafting his father as well, Deion Sanders, head Colorado Coach. However, I do think the Giants will go with Cam Warde, one of the Heisman trophy finalists. With his impressive size and skill, I feel the Giants would benefit from him immensely.
But, personally, I feel that the Giants have much better options. While I may be a biased Notre Dame fan, who is so proud of their comeback, Riley Leonard has become a stand-out quarterback. After transferring from Duke University, he has had a phenomenal year, throwing 2,092 yards, 16 touchdowns, and only 5 interceptions, with an 11-1 record, as of December 10th. Leonard would be such a perfect fit to the Giants as he is not a top rated player, yet he has the skill and confidence to lead the team further.
Unfortunately for Giants fans, I don’t think a new Quarterback is going to solve all their problems. Speaking for all the Giants fans, Head Coach Brian Daboll needs to go. For any fans of the behind the scenes TV show, ‘Hard Knocks’, would’ve picked up that they labeled Daboll as a Coach with an IQ in quarterbacks. Funny. In my honest opinion, Daboll has been the main cause of the Giants’ failure. ‘Hard Knocks’ proved to all NFL fans that he failed to make draft picks that would benefit the team, besides Malik Nabers.
The New York Giants need a coach who has years of experience on great teams and knows how to run a fantastic offense. Coaches like Jim Harbaugh (University of Michigan and now Los Angeles Chargers), Marcus Freeman (Notre Dame), or even James Franklin from Penn State, would be perfect fits as they would inspire and motivate the players.
If the Giants do not make any of these changes, they will not get better anytime soon. For now, all New York and New Jersey fans can rely on the Buffalo Bills and the New York Yankees, to see some success. Thank god.
