It Ends With Us, by bestselling author, Colleen Hoover explores the life of the fictional character, Lily Bloom. This book revolves around heavy themes of domestic violence, romance, and emotional abuse. I read the book last year and absolutely loved it! I wish I could start it from the beginning all over again, I highly recommend it!
When it was first released, Hoover commented that this book was very personal to her and loosely based on her mother’s escape from abuse, saying that this was “the hardest book I’ve ever written” The message behind her writing was to encourage women to take control over their own lives.
On August 9th, a live-action movie was released featuring Blake Lively as the lead. While this storyline can be heartfelt for women in similar situations, Lively does not show any hint of empathy. After watching this movie in theatres, I would have adored the film but Lively completely ruined it. On multiple occasions, Lively has expressed herself, showing how selfish, egotistic, and insolent she really is.
After getting to know every inch of Lily Bloom’s character from the book, watching Lively try to fill her shoes made me cringe. As much as I used to love Lively and her power couple marriage with Ryan Reynolds, after researching recent events, I was left with a very different opinion. Not only is she an egotistical woman, but she is a terrible actress. Looking back at her past movies and shows such as Gossip Girl, I noticed Lively never gets into her character, it’s as if she plays herself in every film.
On August 10th, journalist Kjersti Flaa, released a 2016 interview with Lively, titled, “The Blake Lively interview that made me want to quit my job.” calling her out by stating, “It was the most uncomfortable interview situation I have ever experienced.” Anyone who has watched the video can clearly see. According to People Magazine, Flaa congratulated Lively on her obvious pregnancy by stating, “Congrats on your little bump” and Lively passive-aggressively responded with, “Congrats on your little bump,” shaming Flaa. She also got offended when asked a question about clothes, yet she can’t shut her mouth about fashion and her “expensive rings” during multiple interviews on domestic violence.
This interview wasn’t the only thing to change my perspective of Lively, on many occurrences she has been overbearingly obnoxious while the rest of the cast wants to raise awareness of the message of the movie. According to US Magazine, Lively was interviewed on how people who have experienced abuse or SA can talk to her, Lively sarcastically responded with, “Maybe asking for, like, my address, or my phone number. Or, like, location share?! I could just location-share you and then we could…” leaving everyone fed up with America’s once-favorite actress. These topics are not to be taken lightly and Lively can’t seem to wrap her narcissistic head around the fact that people aren’t watching her movie to fangirl over flowers. Lively talks about the movie like it has no meaning behind it when in reality, these topics are traumatizing for women all over the world.
