The City of Miami works to deter spring breakers this month with a commercial titled “Miami Beach Is Breaking Up With Spring Break.” According to the City of Miami, people should “expect curfews, security checkpoints at beach access points, early beach entrance closures, DUI checkpoints, bumper-to-bumper traffic, road closures and arrests for drug possession and violence.”
These restrictions come as a surprise to many, including GRHS senior Naomi Bashan. “I’ve always thought that Miami was THE college spring break destination.”
During the 2023 spring break, the city saw 488 arrests, with approximately 230 felony charges, plus 100 firearms taken by police. According to CNW, these restrictions come after the disastrous 2023 spring break crowd.
There will be an increase of police patrolling the area after the two deadly shootings that killed two college students last year on Ocean Drive.
Beachgoers flock to the shore during the day, then retreat to the bars at night, creating a hustle and bustle in the city.
