As the warm weather and Spring is approaching people have cravings for specific foods that appeal to their taste buds like myself, I love eating vegetables and fruits such as watermelons. For the purpose of this article, I’m a picky eater so it’s pretty hard for me to find foods that I would definitely get more than once from different restaurants or even cook at home. Some people like to eat certain foods based on the season for example, I eat sushi during the winter because in the Summer it’s easier for raw fish to go bad in restaurants because of the warm weather. I’ve heard many people mention that countries have seasonal foods and in general, some households have traditions where a certain food is eaten during a specific season.
Specifically, in Eastern European culture, an important food is “Okroshka” because it’s a cold soup that’s very refreshing. The cold soup contains a “mix of mostly raw vegetables, boiled potatoes, eggs, cooked meat such as beef, veal, sausages or ham, and kefir” stated in “Russian Recipe Book”. This cold soup is a must for a hot Spring day when you feel like cooling down. Although it sounds disgusting, somehow the ingredients blend extremely well!
Near the Mediterranean, Springtime for them means, fresh vegetables so, salads are very popular amongst them. One of the many popular Greek Salads named, Horiatiki, is made out of red onion, tomatoes, cucumbers, green bell peppers, Kalamata olives, dried oregano, Greek feta, and a splash of vinegar with extra virgin olive oil. This recipe is very easy to control flavor-wise because if you want it more salty or less you can control the amount of feta or salt that goes in it. Overall, I would recommend my friends and family to make it because it’s quick and easy to bring along for lunch or a quick snack.
An extremely healthy and filling roll for sushi lovers that is appealing during the Spring is the Vietnamese Fresh Spring Roll. It’s made out of rice noodles, shrimp, cooked pork, lettuce, carrots, fresh cilantro, mint, Thai basil, and wrapped in rice paper. This snack I love to eat because it’s similar to sushi but not quite and it’s easy to make at home. It’s very savory and it’s a perfect “salad” but rolled up! The Vietnamese Spring Roll is one of my favorite things to eat during the Summer because you don’t have to worry about it expiring since you can make it at home.
These foods are a few of the many popular Spring dishes that people make or order all over the world. Arguably, some ingredients in these dishes aren’t supposed to be mixed unless you try it you will never know what you like, especially when it comes to food. I never thought that kefir could be mixed in with vegetables and meats because that’s a very odd mix in terms of texture and flavor however somehow it works together pretty well. In my opinion sometimes ingredients that seem as if they aren’t supposed to be mixed together turn out to be working the best.
