Every day I open my Spotify app to play music based on my mood to relieve the stress mentally from upcoming assignments and tests. However, since Halloween has passed I’ve been encountering Christmas decorations whether it be in Times Square or websites transitioning from fall sweaters into winter puffer jackets. I appreciate the jolly carolers singing Silent Night in front of my face during early December while it’s snowing however, what I find to be a crime is defrosting Mariah Carey in late October and early November when it’s not even snowing. Personally, if my hands aren’t numbed by the cold during the winter then it might as well not be winter and Christmas it’s just dry fall weather in a different month so, listening to music before the actual holiday isn’t logical and overall doesn’t make any sense.
It feels ridiculous to listen to holiday music when the weather doesn’t resemble the holiday, hence the mood not being as festive as it would be during the holiday. If the context and surroundings don’t correspond with the event then it doesn’t feel as if you’re “in the moment”. However, I can’t deny that I don’t listen to holiday music once in a while mid November entering early December. Christmas is coming shortly and there are definitely a lot of holiday-related activities such as decorating the Christmas tree, baking goods, decorating the interior and exterior of the house, and etc… These festivities should start at a reasonable date that compliments the month and holiday you’re preparing for including the music you’re listening to while doing it.
It’s too early to be listening to Michael Bublè and Frank Sinatra although, I appreciate good music but my substitutes for them are Sam Phillips, Laufey, Sam Cooke, The Smiths, etc… These artists are relatively similar but more modern and definitely provide a good listening experience that suits the passing period between October to early December. However, whatever suits your mood or taste the best during Thanksgiving or this upcoming December most you should listen to since it’s an opportunity for positive engagement around the people you know and love.
