Covid-19 has made an impact towards families celebrating holidays which limited their ability to enjoy their time with their loved ones on a special day where everything is supposed to be joyful and a happy space for all. Halloween is a special holiday for myself and other teenagers because this is the one time of the year we can justify the excessive amount of candy we eat. Instead, 2020 had parents and guardians concerned with their children’s safety because of a rise in Covid cases during the winter months. Big cities such as New York, Chicago, San Francisco, etc.. having doubts about trick or treating because of the safety precautions children need to incorporate such as wearing masks, being extremely cautious about where and what candy they eat, sanitizing every single area, and a lot of more examples. I noticed how in New York City there were fewer houses decorated with the spirit not at the same level it used to be which didn’t give the same feeling as it used to pre pandemic. Following up to 2021, more houses were decorated however it didn’t feel the same because you could see teenagers and kids walking around with masks on which felt as if you were isolated from interacting with people like you used to. This is reflected on why in 2020 there were 41 million people trick or treating compared to the usual amount which is 91 million people trick or treating in the world. This data supports the conclusion that more than half of the normal rate of people did not trick or treat across the world. I’ve noticed there are more people going outside to Trick or Treat since the pandemic has ended because Covid cases are settling down and citizens are feeling more comfortable with going outside during Halloween with their children. It doesn’t seem like we can achieve the holiday being “normal” again because parents and guardians always being worried about “what if” something could happen. But, will this year feel the same as Halloween before Covid felt? It has been over three years since the pandemic began so can we go back to normal because so much time has passed since it has begun. Does Halloween 2023 determine the fate of Halloween in the future?
