Spring Season: Softball Seniors

by Olivia Berard, Editor-in-Chief

The spring season for sports is upon us. Athletes fill the sports lobby after school with lacrosse sticks, running shoes, and bats for softball/baseball. Among these athletes are the seniors who have done so much for each sports team. The captains this year for the Glen Rock High School softball team are Vivian Dietrich, Sophia Brencovich and Angela Gilmartin. Even though the season has just started, these girls have made a powerful impact on the team.

Vivian Dietrich is a four year starter for the GR Panthers as their first baseman. She has a strong bat, as she hits third in the lineup this year. Dietrich had 41 hits last year with 44 RBI’s (runs batted in) and she hopes to continue racking up the runs this season as well.

“I feel kind of indifferent. I’m really going to enjoy not getting home at 6:30 every night, which I feel like is a pro for everything. But I’m also definitely going to miss everybody and the experiences that I had,” says Dietrich when asked about her feelings about this being her last high school softball season.

Sophia Brencovich is also a four year starter for the team. She has played all over the outfield including right field and centerfield this year. Brencovich hits either first or second in the lineup, hitting double after double. Brencovich had 25 RBI’s last season and hopes to continue this stat this year with her fellow senior teammates.

“I’m excited to see how we play as a team because we haven’t all really had much time to play together. Since we lost a lot of seniors last year, we were mostly a senior and upperclassman team. I’m excited to see how we all play together now that we can all be on the field,” says Brencovich when asked about what she is excited about for this season.

Angela Gilmartin is the current third baseman for the Panthers this year. She started as a freshman catcher, but unfortunately hurt her ankle. Last season, she had 18 RBI’s out of 20 hits. Angela hopes to finish her senior season strong with her teammates.

“I believe over time as a team, we’ll come together…” says Gilmartin on the team’s progression so far.

Overall, the team looks in shape with a 4-2 start. The captains have continued their support of their teammates on and off the field. They will continue to lead the team through the season with some big games coming up.
