An epidemic has been spreading rapidly through the streets of Glen Rock, NJ. Over the course of the past five years, three different students from the class of 2021 have been struck by automobiles. This is a problem that needs to be addressed.

An anonymous Sophomore was one of the most recent victims to be hit by a car in Glen Rock. In April, he was struck by a car while riding his bike. Injuries from the crash caused him to miss his high school baseball tryouts, which was the main factor for him not going out for the team this year. “I was really looking forward to playing baseball this season, it was unfortunate that I had to miss it.”
A lot of these accidents that have occurred in Glen Rock have happened during the night. The reason why most accidents occur during the evening is due to the lack of light. Some parts of town the streets are very dark which makes it difficult for people to not be able to see the roads and other surroundings.

Sophomore Ryan LeBlanc, who lives in one of the busiest areas in Glen Rock, weighed in on the issue. “I live on one of the busiest intersections in Glen Rock, and it is by the school so there are many young people who are walking by my house,” said LeBlanc.
“Luckily no pedestrians on my street have been hit, but this has happened in other parts of the town. Drivers need to be more cautious and those on the streets need to be more aware of what is around them.”

Whether more lighting and signs are needed, or it is just the fact that drivers and pedestrians are not giving enough attention to their surroundings, something needs to be done. Fortunately, there have not been any serious injuries to occur, but they still happened. Something needs to change so nothing like this will occur in the future.

“I am lucky enough to have only sustained minor injuries from when I was hit by a car,” said the anonymous Sophomore.
“However, the number of people that have been hit over the past few years in our town is pretty surprising. We need to be as cautious as possible on the streets. What happened to me was bad, but it could have been a lot worse, and I would hate to see that happen to anyone else.”
