The Interact Club held its annual pancake breakfast in coordination with the Rotary Club on Dec. 3.

Members of Interact and the Ridgewood High School Interact Club served the public from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Students worked in shifts to help the men of the Rotary Club serve pancakes and clear tables.

Those who came to the pancake breakfast, mainly senior citizens and families, brought canned foods that were being collected for another service project that would be sponsored by the Rotary Club.

According to Ms. Debra Brolsma, the Interact Club adviser, Interact is a service organization.

“What the premise is, is for kids to give their time and energy to providing service to our school, our community or each other,” Brolsma said.

Brolsma, who is also a special education teacher, assisted students at the pancake breakfast. Brolsma has been the adviser of Interact for around 10 years.

“It’s something that we’ve done several years now because Interact is connected with the Rotary Club. It’s something they have put on for as long as I’ve been adviser,” Brolsma said about the pancake breakfast. “It’s a fun one; the kids enjoy it. It’s a little bit of work but a lot of fun, and you get to eat.”

According to Jerry Kallman, president of the Rotary Club, the pancake breakfast has been around for at least 20 years.

“The pancake breakfast has always been a good idea and the harbinger of Christmas,” Kallman said. Kallman has been associated with the Rotary Club for 54 years.

Brolsma hoped for a big turnout of volunteers at the pancake breakfast but believes that “everybody can do what they can do, nobody’s forced to do a certain amount.”

Additionally, some members of Interact were helping out at the Kilroy’s food drive for the food pantry.

After the holidays, Interact will be doing the Jeans for Teens Campaign and the Interact Fashion Show.
