September 30, 2016
The freshman class of 2020 hosted a breakfast election before school in the cafeteria at on Sept. 27, 2016, to fill the roles of president, vice president, treasurer, corresponding secretary, and recording secretary.
During the breakfast, candidates running gave speeches explaining why they fit and are deserving of the position. The breakfast was mandatory for all freshmen, and every student received a ballot after all candidates presented.
“Get involved, you might be hesitant in your freshman year to join a club or take on a leadership position, you may want to stand by and watch, but this is not the year to do that, you should get involved early on, and really make the most out of your high school experience,” Ms. Ashley Yancy, long term substitute English teacher, said.
Yancy is making her premiere at Glen Rock High school as the freshman class adviser. Yancy was also the vice president of her class freshmen and sophomore year, and continued to be a part of the high school government until graduation.
Yancy explained why council is an important role in the school community. “The council are definitely going to be my leaders and the leaders of the freshman class, so they need to be responsible, role models, they should be very much involved, if there is an event going on they should be in attendance at all times. They should be properly representing the freshman class, praising the event and getting it spirited as possible, trying to get others to go.”
Lauren Amram, freshman and former middle school president, was elected freshman class president. Amram is looking forward to “being able to be the leader of the class and being able to coordinate different bake sales or ways to raise money for our class.”
“My job as vice president is to help out Lauren with ideas that can help the school in a smart and well-functioning way,” Colin Consoli, freshman class vice president, said.“My goal as a school is to be clean and to be a memorable class.”
“It is important because it deals with money so it affects what our grade can and can’t do,” Joan Paek, freshman treasurer, said. “At my church we have fundraisers, so I helped out.”
The freshman class government for the year of 2016-2017 consists of Lauren Amram, president, Colin Consoli, vice president, Joan Paek, treasurer, Sarah Nebbia, corresponding secretary, and Asha Shetler, recording secretary.
“This is an extremely wonderful opportunity not only to develop leadership skills, but also relations with classmates, get to meet different people,” Yancy said. “You get to see ideas through, get to have a say in a lot of the important decisions that we make as a class.”
