Glen Rock football beats Lyndhurst in Homecoming Game
October 21, 2015
In an explosive offensive battle between Lyndhurst and Glen Rock, it was a defensive stand that stood out above the rest.
Glen Rock yielded 331 rushing yards to Lyndhurst Quarterback, Peter Guerriero, the leading rusher in the state of New Jersey but still held on to win by a score of 42-35.
Glen Rock was hard-pressed to find answers as to how to stop Guerriero, who single-handedly kept Lyndhurst in the game.
Glen Rock featured its own rushing attack with junior Ryan Dooner who rushed for 162 yards and one touchdown as well as junior Quarterback Matt Schlett who rushed for 99 yards and three touchdowns.
The game featured four lead changes and appeared all but over late in the fourth quarter. But, thanks to Guerriero’s third rushing touchdown of over 50 yards, Glen Rock found itself in a one score game with less than a minute remaining.
After a botched onside kick attempt, Glen Rock needed one more defensive stop to seal their fifth consecutive victory.
After contributing on both sides of the field all game long, Tommy Pulzello, Siena commit, stepped up and took the game into his own hands by hauling in the game-winning interception with less than 30 seconds remaining.
“Honestly, I was in disbelief that I caught the ball,” Pulzello said. “The game shouldn’t have come down to that but I’m just happy we got the win.”
Schlett also delivered one of his better performances of the season, completing 92% of his passes as well as throwing for two touchdowns.
Junior Safety Tim Ray corralled his fourth interception of the season late in the third quarter which led a Dooner 60-yard rushing touchdown.
This is Glen Rock’s second-straight season defeating Lyndhurst.
Glen Rock faces division rival Harrison in its next game on Friday, Oct. 23. Glen Rock currently leads its group in Power Points (a point system determining playoff seeding) over the likes of bigger schools such as Mahwah and River Dell.
If the season ended today, Glen Rock would have home-field advantage until the final round.
