A First For All-Star Weekend
October 14, 2013
For the 2014-2015 NBA seasons, all-star weekend will be split between both the Knicks and Nets. This is the first time in the history of the NBA that all-star weekend will be split between two different teams. The Nets, who play in the Barclays center in Brooklyn will host the Saturday events which include the shooting starts challenge, the skills challenge, three point shooting contest and the dunk contest. Brooklyn will also host the rising star game on Friday. The Knicks, who play at Madison Square Garden which is located in Manhattan, will host the all-star game on Sunday. This will be the first time the Knicks will host an all-star game since 1998.
With both the Knicks and Nets playing in new arenas (Madison Square Garden has been recently renovated), the NBA thought it would be a good idea to host the all-star game in both Brooklyn and Manhattan. Some people on the other hand disagree with the NBA’s decision on having the all-star game being held in both Brooklyn and Manhattan. Sean McInerney a junior at Glen Rock high school, said “The all-star game should be held in one city… hey, don’t fix what ain’t broke.”
The following season, the Toronto Raptors will play host to the 2016 all-star game. This will be the first time the all-star game will be held outside the United States. Toronto’s arena is one of the loudest arenas in the NBA. The NBA is one of the world’s fastest growing leagues. The official NBA twitter account has over eight million followers on twitter, (Which is the most out of any United States sports league). With trying to bring more attention to international fans, the NBA thought it would be crucial to hold an all-star game outside of the United States. Sean McInerney of Glen Rock high school his opinion on the all-star game being held outside of the United States. “I think that it will be good for the NBA. It should help with international growth.”
With this year’s all-star game being held in New Orleans, the following two seasons for the will be exciting ones.
